Talking Trek: Star Trek Fleet Command
This year, Talking Trek took on a few good causes, and we plan on continuing the work that Gene Roddenberry himself would have been proud of into 2022.
This year, we finished up getting Hailyn her new Diabetic Alert Dog, Sylvie, and sent them for training and back again! While most of the funds were raised last year, in 2020, this year, the call finally came that it was time to head out to training! For 10 days, Hailyn, Tracie, and their family underwent extensive training with Sylvie and how to continue her awareness of Hailyn's life threatening disease. Sylvie came home for the first time this year and the Talking Trek Community took care of just about every expense regarding their travel. From a rental van, to hotel points, to food gift cards while they were there, Hailyn's family paid for virtually nothing during this time period, removing the stress of worrying about the travel, and allowing them to focus on what mattered; Getting Hailyn's new savior home safely.
We also had a chance to meet Liam this year, an incredibly brave 5 year old boy who was diagnosed with leukemia in May of 2020. This year, an equally brave member of our community, Jason, decided to do something about it. He joined the Great Cycle Challenge to benefit the Childrens Cancer Research Fund, and pledged to ride his bike 500 miles to support brave children like Liam. Talking Trek collected 460 in pledges from the community, then turned around and MATCHED those donations for a total of $920 towards childhood cancer research this year! We look forward to seeing what we can do in 2022!!!!
And maybe for our most touching story of the year, and the most recent, Talking Trek adopted an "angel" family for Christmas. The Beatle family's story was heartbreaking and really inspired us all to be grateful for our good health. Not only we were able to provide a Christmas for this amazing family, but we were able to remind Talia, a 14 year old cancer survivor that she has NEVER EVER been alone. The smiles and joy spread throughout this household this year was amazing, as the Talking Trek Community raised over $5500, with Talking Trek contributing $750 of it's Gold Patron funds to not only ensuring a happy holiday, but putting food on the table, and clothing on the backs of NOT only the Beatles, but a SECOND family as well. The Christmas Spirit of the Talking Trek Community was on full display this year, and it was overwhelming to watch what our community was capable of!
